Clearwater Winery

Junkai Fu, Sabrina Kunigenas, Adam Wingert

Nestled in a hill along the River Lodano is Clearwater Winery. The building sits at the intersection of the only two roads connecting the North side of the river to the town of Lodano, revealing itself slowly as the visitor moves up to and across the river. Discovery is a key element of the project, using the site and vertical layering to create moments of reveal. The large upper piazza gives a space for events and gatherings to the town while disguising the mass that lies just below. Once inside, the production of wine is organized around an open elevator used to transport grapes and wine throughout the facility. Each area of production features elements to highlight that stage of the process such as the circular barrel rack that allows the age of the wine to be seen through the position of the barrel along the coil. These spaces end in a large dining and tasting room, a space to celebrate the view of the river and the wine produced along it.
